An independent alternative band formed in 1995, bLuE daHLia is described by the Detroit Free Press as “more adventurous than anyone else dares to be.” The exotic ripples through each composition, blending textural guitars, melodic bass, and soaring multi-lingual vocals with ethnic, orchestral percussion.
After years of club performances, theatrical, avant garde concerts, bLuE daHLia created five arresting studio releases before going on hiatus in 2012. Blue Dahlia’s signature sound accompanied the Wellspring modern dance company, and nearly a dozen silent films, including Buster Keaton classics, Clara Bow, and Nosferatu, among others.
Highlights have included performances at the Waterfront Film Festival, East Lansing Film Festival, and Ann Arbor Film Festival. Artistic members included Derek Menchinger (guitar/mandolin), Leslie Boughton (vocals), Cara Lieurance (squeezebox, flutes, vocals), Levi Strickland (guitar/bass) & Carolyn Koebel (drum-set/world percussion).
